Shopify Plus is Shopify’s enterprise tier, positioned for high-volume merchants and brands with complex operational requirements. At roughly $2,300–$2,500 per month (versus $29–$299 for standard plans), it represents a significant cost increase. The question every growing Shopify store eventually faces: is it worth it?
The honest answer: for some stores at the right stage, Shopify Plus pays for itself quickly. For others, it is an expensive upgrade that delivers features they will not use. Here is how to think through the decision.
What Shopify Plus Actually Adds
Checkout Customisation (Checkout Extensibility)
This is the feature that drives the majority of Shopify Plus upgrades. On standard Shopify plans, checkout customisation is highly limited. Shopify Plus gives you access to checkout extensibility: the ability to add custom upsell blocks, reorder form fields, add custom content, integrate third-party payment methods, and personalise the checkout experience for different customer segments.
For stores where checkout optimisation is a primary CRO lever — and the data shows meaningful conversion rate upside in the checkout flow specifically — this alone can justify the upgrade cost.
Shopify Functions
Shopify Functions allows you to customise backend business logic: custom discount types, custom shipping rules, custom payment methods, custom cart logic. This is developer-required functionality that enables complex B2B pricing, volume discounts, and promotional mechanics that standard Shopify cannot support natively.
Shopify Flow (Automation)
Shopify Flow is an automation platform — if/then workflows that trigger actions based on events in your store. Common uses: automatically tagging VIP customers, sending internal notifications for high-value orders, pausing ad campaigns when inventory falls below a threshold, creating loyalty tier movements based on spend.
Multiple Stores and Expansion
Shopify Plus includes up to nine expansion stores within the Plus monthly fee. For international expansion strategies where separate localised stores are the right approach (versus Shopify Markets), this is meaningful cost savings.
Reduced Transaction Fees
Shopify Plus has lower transaction fees than standard plans — 0.15% versus 0.5–2% depending on your plan tier. At high volume, this difference is significant. A store doing $2M annually saves approximately $7,000–$37,000 per year in transaction fees compared to lower plan tiers, offsetting a portion of the Plus cost.
When to Upgrade to Shopify Plus
The revenue threshold Shopify commonly cites is $1M+ in annual revenue. That is a rough guide, not a rule. The more useful framework — upgrade when:
- You are losing revenue because you cannot customise checkout (and you have the data to prove this)
- Your transaction fee savings at current volume nearly offset the cost increase
- You need custom discount logic, custom shipping rules, or complex B2B pricing that Shopify Functions provides
- You are expanding internationally and need multiple localised stores
- You have a development team that will actually build and maintain the custom checkout components
When Not to Upgrade
If your growth constraint is conversion rate on product pages (not checkout), ad performance, email retention, or AOV — none of these are solved by Shopify Plus. If you are upgrading because you feel like a bigger business needs a bigger plan, that is not a return-on-investment calculation.
Shopify Advanced at $299/month handles the vast majority of growing stores’ needs extremely well. Upgrade when the features unlock real revenue or efficiency. Not before.
